Magical Mermaid Hugs for GDP121

Today I am happy to be contributing to the Global Design Project as a Guest Designer. I chose the cute mermaid stamp from Magical Day to highlight the colors for this challenge and went from there. Here is my card:

And here is the banner that inspired my card:

It is hard to see all the fun sparkles on this card when photographing it straight on, so I’ll show a couple different angels. First, there is the amazing shimmery bubble paper from the Myths & Magic Specialty Designer Series Paper. There is glitter on every bubble and it really adds some shine to the card. The best thing about this specialty paper is that is is thick AND double-sided! The opposite side has another fun pattern to choose from, but no sparkles.

The mermaid started out with its own shine by stamping it on Shimmery White Cardstock. After using my Aqua Painter and ink from the top of the Bermuda Bay and Peekaboo Peach ink pads to color the image, I added a coat of Clear Wink of Stella. I love this look and added it to the Bermuda Bay bubbles on the top portion of the card as well.

As with most color challenges, I struggled a bit with how these colors would play nicely together. I started with the mermaid and added several layers of each color to get more depth out of each one. The hair turned out amazing with the shading! I added a very light wash of Peekaboo Peach to her skin and a touch of Sweet Sugarplum to her cheeks. This was actually going to be it for the Sweet Sugarplum, and I stamped the heart in Bermuda Bay first. But then I thought that might be cheating a bit, so I stamped the heart again with Sweet Sugarplum (stamped off once) and ended up liking it better anyway.

The sentiment is from Ribbon of Courage and fits nicely inside the heart. I love it when I find stamp sets that work well together! And this is especially important with Heart Happiness because there are no sentiments included in this set.

I hope you enjoyed my card today, and be sure to head over the the Global Design Project to check out all the projects by the other designers. They never disappoint!

  1. Absolutely adorable! I love the way you used the Sweet Sugarplum for the heart, which really pops. I must get the sequin embossing folder

    • Julie DeGuia says:

Thank you Sue – I’m glad you like the heart b/c I wasn’t sure about the color at first! I’m not sure which sequin embossing folder you are referring to, but I don’t believe I used one on my card. 🙂 I would be curious to hear from you.

  2. Perfectly precious!
