Petal Palette for GDP117

Today I am playing along with the Global Design Project color challenge. When I saw the colors for the challenge I was not sure what direction to go with them. I did know I wanted to use my new products and the Petal Palette stamp set was calling my name! I have seen so many gorgeous color combinations using this upcoming set but I can assure you that Real Red, Lemon Lime Twist and Crumb Cake was not one of them. With Christmas in the air, I started thinking of a little red bird among the snowy leaves. Well, I guess the snow fell off the branch the bird landed on, and the leaves were still a pretty bright green underneath!

Here is the card I came up with:

And here is the banner that inspired my card:

I am so glad I finally purchased the Layered Leaves embossing folder. This is one of several 3D Dynamic Textured Impressions Embossing Folders in the Stampin’ Up! line and it was very easy to use. Since these folders have a deeper impression you need to give the paper a little spritz with water before running it through the Big Shot. This helps break down the fibers in the paper so that there is no tearing as the paper is pushed into the impressions of the folder. I really love the simple and elegant detail it adds to the background of the card.

The bird gave me a little trouble on this card. I thought I needed to stamp the image in Memento Tuxedo Black ink and then color it. First I tried adding the red ink just where the white space was. Then I tried coloring over some of the black ink as well. And finally I tried stamping off once with the black ink and covering the entire image with a layer of color. None of these seemed right. However, when I stamped the image in Real Red ink that was the one that fit. I think adding the black threw off the balance of this already tricky color scheme!
