Sometimes when you get an idea in your head it doesn’t pan out the way you want it to. And even though this card took a couple detours along the way I am very pleased with the result!

First up was the watercolor background using the Emboss Resist technique. I took the snowflakes from the beautiful Snowflake Sentiments set, and the little dots from the retiring set Feeling of Christmas, to create my snowy scene. I stamped each image several times in VersaMark ink on Shimmery White Cardstock. The spacing was much better on the top half of the card but the stamps were a little hard to position as they are all clear mount stamps. I did stamp them in groups, coating each set with Clear Embossing Powder before moving to the next images. Once all were stamped and covered with powder, I heat set them with my Heat Tool.

Now comes the resist part of the technique. I squeezed my Pool Party Classic Stampin’ Pad together to get some ink transferred to the top of the pad. Then I opened it and added two drops of the Tempting Turquoise ink refill and four drops of water from my Aqua Painter. (Note: in this picture I show the Tempting Turquoise ink pad but I didn’t use it – the ink from the refill gives a more vibrant result.) You want a good amount of water so that you can move the brush quickly over the entire area. This is where you see the design emerge before your eyes as the ink slides right over, or resists, the embossed images. After you are happy with the ink coverage, make sure to let the paper dry completely before removing the tape. I used the Heat Tool to speed up the process.

Tip: Secure the cardstock to your work surface with tape. Make sure the paper is completely dry before removing the tape so that the background doesn’t warp.

My initial plan was to use the bird image from the beautiful (upcoming) Petal Palette stamp set. I just made a card with this set a couple days ago and the negative die cut of the bird was still laying on my work surface. When I moved it over my watercolor piece the idea popped into my head to cut the bird from the background. I also noticed that if I positioned the die cut over a certain part of the snowflake it looked like the bird’s eye.

The design for this card is a CASE of the card I made earlier in the week. It actually worked out perfectly because I was able to cut the bird out from the side of the background and then cover it with the stitched circle. Sometimes things just fall into place when you are making a card! If you notice though, the paper in this photo is Rich Razzleberry, which also looks great with the other colors. But I switched to Berry Burst because I felt it worked better with the Lemon Lime Twist used on the branch. The branch is fussy cut, and I did alter the stamp a bit by removing the ink from two of the top leaves before stamping the image. I needed that space for the bird to sit.

Tip: Get the most out of your paper by cutting shapes from areas you know will be covered with another element in the design.

I wanted a bright and cheery color combo for the New Year’s theme, so I chose Berry Burst, Lemon Lime Twist and Tempting Turquoise. I did mix a bit of Pool Party in with the Tempting Turquoise to tone down the brightness of my background, but it is still so pretty and vibrant! My sentiment is from Beautiful Bouquet. The only sentiment I have that says “Happy New Year” is from Teeny Tiny Wishes and I didn’t think it worked on the front of this card. So I opted for a simple “Hello” and the size of the font is just right. Hello to the New Year of course!

I hope you enjoyed my card for the hop this month. You should definitely give the Emboss Resist technique a try – it is lots of fun!
