Here is my card for this month:

When I started out making the card for this blog hop my intention was to make a patriotic card. I started with a red and blue striped background with the idea to use the Eclectic Layers Thinlits Dies to simulate stars on a flag. At least that was the image I had in my head. When I was done, the watercolor background didn’t look good and I didn’t want to invest any more time in that idea.

When card-making hands you a lemon… make lemonade!

So my summer-themed tip for today is when card-making hands you a lemon… make lemonade! I flipped the watercolor paper over and took out some bright colors and painted a new background. And I did intend for this to just be a background, but I didn’t have a vision for turning it into a card. However, the more I looked at it the more I saw Rainbow Sherbet ice cream. I used the Frozen Treats Framelits to cut out each scoop and they looked so yummy I just had to keep stacking them straight up to the top of the card!

Once I figured out the direction I was headed, this card was pretty simple to put together.

  • The sherbet scoops are colored with Melon Mambo and Peekaboo Peach.
  • The sentiment is from the Cool Treats set and stamped in Melon Mambo.
  • I used Powder Pink for the card base and Melon Mambo for the mat.
  • I added a bit of clear Wink of Stella over all the ice cream scoops and a selection of Iridescent Sequins to finish it off.

If you notice, I snipped around the border of the geometric die cut and removed it from the watercolor background. I will be using this interesting shape on another card in the future. I was hoping to have that completed as well, but I ran out of time. Now that it is summer break and the kids are out of school, crafting hours are few and far between!

You can make this card!

This card has minimal stamping and a messy (read: you can’t get it wrong) watercolor technique. Here is a link to the main products you will need to complete this card. The rest of the supplies I used can be found at the end of the blog post.
