Global Design Project 036: CASE the Designer – Paula Dobson

I am always excited for Monday morning to see what the Global Design Project has in store for us! This week we get to CASE a wonderful card-maker from New Zealand: Paula Dobson.GDP036 I love the stamp set she used for the inspiration card and while I don’t have it myself, I was happy to pull out the Gift of Love set which will be available to hostesses (with a $150 party) in the new 2016-2017 Stampin’ Up! Idea Book & Catalog. I focused on a couple things from Paula’s card: the repetitive flowers both fully stamped and stamped off, and the use of the Hello You Thinlits.

Global Design Project 036

I was planning on masking the fully stamped flowers before stamping the other two and even had a mask cut out (which I had used on the first card I made – see below) but when I realized I needed two masks I decided to skip that step. Ha! First I stamped all the outlines in Dapper Denim. I completed the stamped off flowers first using Pear Pizzazz and Sweet Sugarplum (also stamped off), and then moved on to the fully stamped flowers using Emerald Envy and Flirty Flamingo. I had just a bit of trouble with the ink making a clean image and for those areas I went back in with a wet brush and ink from the top of the ink pad and filled them in. When you stamp on Crumb Cake cardstock the color is a bit muted and I wanted the the shadow of “thanks” to match the other stamping, so I cut it out in Crumb Cake and used my brush and ink to add Flirty Flamingo – a perfect match!

The word “many” is from the Crazy About You stamp set which bundles with the Hello You Thinlits for a 15% discount – I made sure to grab that bundle this month before it goes away! You can still buy them separately from the new catalog, just without the savings. Because this is a rather tall stamp to use on a horizontal card I wasn’t able to put a mat around the main panel, and I had a bit of trouble deciding what card base color to use. I tried Whisper White Thick, Flirty Flamingo and finally decided on Emerald Envy to help spread out the darkness of the green leaves.

Global Design Project with Gift of Love

Here is the first card I made. I actually started this Sunday night but was having trouble with the sentiment. I tried one from the Gift of Love set and I also tried “thanks” from the Expressions Natural Elements pack but didn’t love either of them. Once I saw the challenge I looked to the Hello You Thinlits paired with a white embossed on black cardstock strip to finish off my card. I love how that tied in with the white embossed flower. I used a damp brush and ink from the tops of my Classic Stampin’ Pads in Emerald Envy, Peekaboo Peach and Flirty Flamingo to color in the leaves and flowers. I also masked the flower and used Versa Mark ink with one of the stamps from Gorgeous Grunge to add some texture.

  1. They’re both beautiful cards Julie. Love the colors on crumb cake and the white embossing adds a special touch. I must get this bundle before the offer ends. 🙂

They both look great Julie! Well done. I love the new colours, they’re just stunning! Make sure you pin your project to the official Global Design Project Pinterest Board xx

  3. Beautiful, Julie! I love your presentation of this stamp set – what a wonderful showcase of these beautiful flowers and a lovely tribute to Paula’s card. Thank you for playing along with this week’s CASE the Designer Challenge!

    • Julie DeGuia says:

Thanks Brian! I have a few more ideas for this set but have moved on for the time being… I will be pulling it back out again soon though!

  4. Julie, I had to laugh out loud when you realised you would need another mask, then flagged it!! Can’t blame you, but as it turns out, you didn’t need it. I love the “bits” you took from my card and turned into your own. The white embossed sentiment strip looks great alongside the big die cut on both projects! Thanks for playing at Global Design Project with us this week.

    • Julie DeGuia says:

I’m glad I could give you a laugh Paula! 🙂 Thanks for your comment… I thought of you this morning because one of the moms (or grandmas) at my son’s preschool is named Paula Dodson. I don’t know her but when I saw her name written this morning I did a double-take – so close to your name!

  5. So many pretty cards! I want that stamp set now. WOW.

Happy to see the challenge at Global Design Project could inspire you.

    • Julie DeGuia says:

Thank you Teneale! I wasn’t sure about this set at first but sometimes I get a set on a whim and then see what I can come up with. 🙂
