Global Design Project #034: Watercolor Sketch Challenge

I was sad to have missed the color challenge last week at GDP, but I did make a card which I will show at the end of this post. Now this week was right up my alley. I love watercolored backgrounds, and all the samples by the design team were amazing! But in the end I decided to do something a little different. I wanted to see what would happen if I stamped on Shimmery White Cardstock in our Classic ink and then brushed over all the stamping with water. Since the color doesn’t move as much as it does on watercolor paper I was hoping it would blend the colors a bit leaving a light wash of the colors on the background while still being able to see the stamped images. Here is the result!

Card-GDP034I love it when I can use just one stamp set to complete a card and here that set was Designer Tin of Cards from the new 2016-2017 Annual Catalog. This is the set I won during Prize Patrol at Onstage in April and it has a lot of great sentiments, which is what I was initially drawn to. But then I saw the fun confetti stamps and started getting more ideas. I’m glad I could work this set into the challenge this week while still keeping with the watercolor-style sketch! The confetti images are stamped on Shimmery White Cardstock in Pumpkin Pie, Tangerine Tango and Melon Mambo. I used a wide paintbrush to add water and blend the colors for a nice watercolor background. The sentiment is stamped in Tuxedo Black on Whisper White Cardstock and adhered to a circle cut from Melon Mambo. I used the 2-Way Glue Pen to adhere the background to a piece of Whisper White Thick Cardstock of the same size (4″ x 5.25″) to add stability because it had warped a bit from the water. Then I mounted it to a Melon Mambo card base. Finally I added some heart sequins from the Brights Collection to finish off the card.

Here is my card for the color challenge last week. I don’t have the colors for this challenge and was debating all week if I should use retired ink… and then I missed the deadline. LOL! Well a lot of the current colors are similar to past colors so I think it is a pretty good match. I used Not Quite Navy in place of Night of Navy and Cameo Coral in place of Calypso Coral.

I have been wanting to make a card with the Mini Treat Bag Thinlits ever since I heard that it will fit in a standard A2 envelope, and it does! This is the first time I used this pattern from the It’s My Party DSP Stack and I think it worked great as the bag part of this card. I did die cut some Whisper White cardstock to add to the inside so the opposite pattern/color of the DSP wasn’t showing. Then I took the small flower from Circle of Spring and stamped it in Cameo Coral inside each white circle. I used the Circles Collections Framelits and cut out the second smallest shape. Then I took my Not Quite Navy Stampin’ Spot and completely covered the circle with ink. The sentiment, also from Circle of Spring, was stamped in Versa Mark, sprinkled with white embossing powder, and heat set. A fairly simple card with lots of room inside for a long note to a good friend!

  3. Two beautiful projects this week. I love the fun birthday card. Those colors are amazing and I can’t see any way that card wouldn’t add a smile to anyone’s face. I also love the way you’ve handled last week’s color challenge. Simple, but stunning. Thanks for playing with us at Global Design Project.
